A cover redesign for Impact 2, which is a book focused on introducing covers for graphic design magazine from 1974 to 2016.
Since the name of the book is impact, I aimed for creating a cover using wide formal explorations. I did a lot of line drawings using conventional methods like charcoal, pen, pencil, brush with different inks. Then I scanned and processed them digitally and played around with them. The final piece was picked from one of dozens of explorations. FF Meta was chosen as the typeface for the cover thanks to its humanistic feeling.
Size: 7.25" * 9.75"
Book covers designed for a series of CCA books introducing three different architects.
The three covers are designed under a coherent visual system to achieve familiarity and consistency among them. Different color palettes as well as background images are used to differentiate the three architects.
Size: 7" * 9"
Book cover designed for the famous novel Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky as a Chinese version. The white and black letter forms on the cover are Chinese characters for crime and punishment.
I was aiming for a simple design with a lot of contrast in mind because the novel contains a lot of tensions in its story. The two Chinese characters that represent crime and punishment create many vertical and horizontal counterspaces which also create an abstract feeling. The choose of color palette also serves building up the tension of the book.
Size: 5.5" * 8"
An alternative book cover designed for my book Designing with Type (see below). This cover focuses more on using types with bright colors to express the nature of the content.
FF Meta is chosen to be identical to the typeface used inside the book. The humanistic letterforms provide a playful and contemporary feeling to the book.
NOTE: A book about graphic design and typography! What should its cover be? Formal study of course!
Book, perfect binding
