A book dedicated to show maps and charts of North America from 1600 to 1900. Maps of the continent, rivers, states, fortifications, and panoramas are introduced.
The overall form is focused on showing a formal and aged quality that would resemble the age of exploration. The choices of paper as well as the binding method were all aimed to reflect the subject matter. Mrs. Eaves, an elegant typeface that provides a sense of hand-written quality, was chosen as the main text and display typeface of the book.
Page hierarchies are also emphasized. There is a introduction, a long essay, and maps about the subject matter in each chapter, and there’s a pages of image references at the end of the book showing essential information of all the maps that appeared in the book.
Book, stitch binding (Coptic Stitch for covers, Double Whip Stitch for the rest.)

A book of ten great essays reflecting the development of modern typography and information design by eight different authors. The book was designed to be relatively small and portable as something easy to be carried and read in any environments. The typography of the book is designd to have a contemporary feeling with asymmetric layouts, thus reflecting the subject matter.
Each spread of the book was meticulously designed. The juxtaposition of text and image is well thought to bring unique experience every time entering a new spread.
FF Meta was chosen as the display type, and Bembo was chosen as the text type. Though two of the types fall in very different categories, they resonance well in this project to form a clean and neat feeling.

A photo book all about textures! All pages were printed from digital negatives using Cyanotype, an antique photo printing process. Cyanotype prints appear like black-and-white photos, but with blue tones instead as its name suggests. The entire book is and will not be flat due to the wrapping tendency of the pages which adds organic feeling.
The entire book was crafted by hand. All the pages were coated with New Cyanotype chemicals, exposed, developed, and dried. Content of the book includes lines and textures from the mother nature, textures from every-day objects, and miniature textures under macroscopic lenses.

Design an archive of swordsmanship illustrations in a visually interesting way. The form of the archive should resemble well with the subject matter.
The archive is designed as an accordion, showing different illustrations of swordsmanships from different periods. The form of the illustrations show how they evolve in the history.
NOTE: Swordsmanship, a distinct type of martial art, shows a lot of our cultures in the history. Originally came from the need of battle, to the need of self-protection and judicial duels, and finally becomes a sport, different schools of swordsmanship rise and fall, but their ideals show our struggle and wisdom of understanding of our weapons under pragmatic restrictions as well as life and death threats. Its development worth some celebrations.

This is a reflection piece made for one of my class, containing all the reflections I wrote for each unit in the class. All the documentation of my works as well as my thoughts about each unit show in another re_fer_ences book.
Monark, my own typeface, was chosen for this project. Only one typeface of one weight and one size was used in the two books. (A limitation implemented by myself.) As a result, different typographic methods were used to show all the hierarchies in the book.
