Overview
Monark was originally inspired by newspaper types with low contrast letterforms, large x-height, small ascenders & descenders, heavy serifs, as well as large internal spaces. It is designed to be very legible when set in small sizes.

Monark aims to capture the theme from Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Internal conflicts are presented by counterforms of glyphs.

The regular book weight provides a uniform texture when set in book sizes. Heavy serifs would connect glyphs together, forming consecutive flows throughout the entire page.

Gradually, the Monark book font has became a type family including two Display weights, two Book weights and their italic versions. The Display weights aim at fully expressing all the small details which feature thin and long serifs, top-heavy letterforms, (little) condensed nature, and abnormal curve-linear relationships. The Italics aim at combining internal conflicts of the Monark family and calligraphic features together, resulting in angled letter-forms that feel coherent to each other.

Design Brief
Experiment with the idea of generalized use of types. Design a typeface that is feasible to be used in small text sizes while being unique enough to be used as big display types.

Stonehenge
Stonehenge family features very unconventional letterforms. The fonts are both legible and elegant.

Some type traditions no longer work for this typeface such as the idea of harilines, stress, as well as the relation between stems and bowls which result in highly unique letterforms. However, others are strictly kept to make the type legible such as low contrast, low ascenders/descenders, and traditional proportions and bare-bones for letterforms on the rudimentary level.

The letterforms all about the relations betwen curves and lines. Once the rough drafts were created, a system was created to make the inconsistencies consistent.

The fact that people perceive type very differently in different sizes is largely exaggerated in Stonehenge. Many of the expressive relations between straights and curves in its letterform get lost when the type is set for book sizes, leaving the essential bare-bones. I'm glad that Stonehenge successfully carries the familiar bare-bones of types that legibility is achieved.

Design Brief
Neon is an experimental type designed to hide information instead of showing information. Various design decisions are made to make individual glyphs as hard to pick up as possible.

Vertical Type
Neon writes vertically, from top to bottom and from right to left like some scripts in the far east. The experiment from the type Hotel shows that reading vertical latin types are inherently very difficult, so it can be a great opportunity to hide information.

Unfamiliar Letterforms
The letterforms of Neon may feel like rotated forms of condensed sans-serifs, but they are far from that. Many letters look quite far from their stereotypical images in our minds while still following certain rules to define what they are. Instinctively, the weird letterforms would cause a lot of confusions for readers when reading them, especially for some of the upper-case letters that only bare loose resemblances with their traditional letters such as B, F, G, H, M, and N.

Unique Textures
The lack of legibility of the type also comes from its uniform texture. Every glyph in the alphabet is composed of only horizontal bars (horizontal stems) and vertical half-circle connectors (vertical hairlines). Without any optical corrections of glyph heights against each other, an entire paragraph set in Neon would have a very uniform texture that really hide individual glyphs in it, making people very hard to pick each one of them out. Also, the simplicity of the glyphs means the lack of individuality. Many of the glyphs are simply mirrors of each other such as b, d, q, p; a, g; E, B, C, D etc.

Pragmatic Tweaks
The new letterforms bring new challenges and limitations, and the most obvious ones are kernings. Because the letters are supposed to set vertically, some of the traditional kernings do not need to be addressed anymore but some new combinations would need special trackings. Letters such as P and Q would perform similarly as traditional T that needs kernings with other lower-case letters.

Meanwhile, some of the letter combinations that form a giant void in between such as n u, h u would need special cares to open up the points their hairlines meet, or the combinations would feel they have more visual stress than they should be which would break the uniform texture of the reading material.

Design Brief
Hotel is an experimental type designed to be set vertically instead of horizontally. It flows from top to bottom and from right to left, like some far east asian scripts.

Vertical Type
For thousands of years, latin letters are always written and set horizontally, but what if there is a viable way to set them vertically? The opportunities would be endless. Typographical variety, advertisements, display types, and billboards can all benefit from having a vertical type-setting option.

Problems With Vertical Typesetting
Because latin letters were designed to be written horizontally, they won't feel right when setting vertically. Because most traditional types are designed narrow and tall, setting them vertically would make the entire paragraph very thin and tall which is awkward to read; The presence of ascenders and descenders also prevent types to be set vertically with uniform letter-spaces; traditional letters usually have uneven letterwidths so they won't be aligned with each other when set vertically; setting traditional letters vertically also removes the reading rhythms that they bring in which is usually defined by the thick stems of the letters.

A New System
Hotel features a new system to be set vertically. All the letters have the same optical width so they can be aligned vertically; Letters have horizontal ascenders and descenders just for special glyphs; glyphs are optically balanced in the vertical direction instead of horizontal direction; glyphs are designed to be wide and flat to be accommodated in a smaller area.

Versatile Type
Hourglass is another versatile type after Stonehenge above. The type is designed to be suitable enough to be used for both display and legible texts purposes. With the base letterforms of a traditional square sans-serif, Hourglass has very strong personalities to stand out as beautiful display letters. The letterforms feature low contrast with very thin connection points between hairlines and stems which also act as ink traps when the type is set at small sizes.
